Spermatogenesis vs Oogenesis

Side-by-side comparison of male and female gamete production at every stage. Timing, gamete count, cytoplasm distribution and hormonal control.

Gametogenesis

Spermatogenesis vs Oogenesis: side-by-side

Walk through every stage of gametogenesis and see how the timing, the number of gametes, and the cytoplasm distribution differ between males and females.

Stage

Spermatogenesis (male)

Oogenesis (female)

Germ cell

2n

Spermatogonium

Oogonium

Primary stage

2n

Primary spermatocyte

Primary oocyte (arrested at prophase I from fetal life)

Meiosis I complete

n

2 secondary spermatocytes (equal sized)

1 large secondary oocyte + 1 tiny first polar body

In females, meiosis I completes only just before ovulation.

Meiosis II complete

n

4 spermatids (equal sized)

1 ovum + 1 second polar body (after fertilization only)

In females, meiosis II is triggered by sperm entry. The secondary oocyte is arrested at metaphase II until then.

Final gamete

n

4 motile sperms (after spermiogenesis)

1 functional ovum (3 polar bodies degenerate)

Key differences NEET tests

Starts at

Puberty

Fetal life (in the female fetus)

Continuous?

Yes, continuous from puberty

No, paused twice (prophase I, metaphase II)

Gametes per germ cell

4 functional sperms

1 functional ovum + 3 polar bodies

Cytoplasm distribution

Equal in all 4 cells

Almost all goes to the ovum; polar bodies are tiny

Duration of one round

~64 to 75 days

~28 days (one cycle), but each oocyte waits years

Triggered by

LH + FSH continuously

LH surge once per cycle

Try this

  • Count the number of meiotic divisions a primary oocyte goes through and compare with a primary spermatocyte.
  • Ask yourself: why does oogenesis produce only 1 functional gamete? (Hint: the ovum must keep enough cytoplasm to support the early embryo.)
  • Look up "polar body" and confirm it is haploid but does not develop further. NEET sometimes traps you on this.

Menstrual cycle explorer

Drag the day slider through a 28-day cycle. See FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone curves update live, with phase facts for the ovary and uterus at each point.

Menstrual cycle

Menstrual cycle: day-by-day explorer with hormone graph

Drag the day slider to scrub through a 28-day cycle. See FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone curves update live, with what is happening in the ovary and the uterus at each phase.

Ovary

Graafian follicle ruptures. Secondary oocyte is released (arrested at metaphase II).

Uterus

Endometrium is thick and ready. Cervical mucus is thin and stretchy.

Hormones

LH SURGE peaks at day 13 to 14 (positive feedback from estrogen). FSH also peaks briefly.

What happens

Ovulation is the actual release of the egg. The egg is viable for about 24 hours.

Try this

  • Move the slider to day 14. Which hormone is at its peak? (NEET asks this every other year.)
  • Move to day 22. Now which hormone dominates? Notice estrogen has a small second peak too.
  • Drag back to day 28. What happens to progesterone, and what does that trigger next?

Pregnancy timeline

Scrub from fertilization through implantation, the trimesters, and parturition. Every NCERT-tested milestone (month 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9) is highlighted.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy timeline: fertilization to birth

Click a stage chip or drag the slider to scrub through pregnancy. See exactly what happens from day 0 (fertilization) through the NCERT-tested milestones of months 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 9.

Week 1 (month 1)

Week 1

Implantation (day 6 to 7)

Blastocyst attaches to the uterine endometrium and embeds. Trophoblast secretes hCG to keep the corpus luteum alive.

NCERT NEET fact

Implantation = around day 6 to 7 after fertilization (~day 21 of menstrual cycle).

Try this

  • Jump to End of 5 months. Two things happen here that NEET loves to ask about. What are they?
  • Find the difference between the morula and the blastocyst. Which one is solid and which is hollow?
  • Trace the path: zygote → ? → ? → morula → blastocyst → implantation. Can you give the day of each?
